Ronald Cruz of Makati cocktail bar Fat Cat will represent the Philippines at the Diageo World Class Global Finals in Scotland this September after being named World Class Philippines Bartender of the Year 2026.

Cruz secured the national title after a series of competition challenges. For his winning entry, he created contemporary interpretations of classic cocktails inspired by Johnnie Walker Black Ruby, showcasing different flavor influences drawn from wine-cask maturation.

The bartender said he entered the competition without expecting to take home the top prize. "I really went into it not expecting anything," Cruz said. "My team and I just prepared and we won."

His victory comes as judges point to the high standards of the Philippine bartending scene. Charles Richard, World Class Indonesia 2025 champion and one of this year's judges, said the quality of entries made the competition particularly challenging to assess.

Another judge, World Class Korea 2025 champion Damon Park, cited the creativity of Filipino bartenders and their use of local ingredients among the qualities that impressed him.

Organizers also noted broader participation this year, with more first-time competitors and bartenders coming from outside Metro Manila.

For industry veterans, competitions such as World Class have become important platforms for raising the profile of local bars and hospitality professionals. Ryan Asiddao, co-founder of Makati bar The Jury, said international recognition helps attract visitors seeking food and beverage experiences.

As he prepares for Scotland, Cruz said he hopes more Filipino bartenders will challenge themselves by joining competitions. "Even if you lose, you still come out ahead as long as you learn something," he said.
