MANILA — Industry players, researchers, designers, and policymakers gathered at the Philippine International Convention Center last January 27 to 29 for the National Textile Convention (TELACon) 2026, a three-day event that examined the current state and future direction of the Philippine textile sector.

TELACon 2026 Convention

Held as part of Philippine Tropical Fabrics Month, the convention served as a meeting point for discussions on innovation, sustainability, workforce development, and market expansion, as well as the challenges facing local textile production in a changing global landscape.

Sustainability and regional development

Discussions on the opening day centered on sustainability, cultural preservation, and regional participation in the textile economy. Panels explored the role of Philippine textiles in education, cultural exchange, and emerging markets, including regional initiatives in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Several sessions focused on how research and development can be translated into practical applications for manufacturers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in the context of global sustainability standards and increasing demand for traceable, responsibly produced materials.

KATHABI Expo

These themes were reflected in the KatHABI Textile Innovation Exposition, which featured products made from natural fibers and developed locally. Participants included weavers, garment and uniform manufacturers, shoemakers, and embroidery producers from various regions, offering a cross-section of how innovation is being applied across the supply chain.

During a press briefing held after the opening sessions, speakers discussed the continued promotion of Philippine tropical fabrics in both public and private settings, as well as the role of local textiles in sustainability efforts, cultural preservation, and livelihood generation. Climate-related discussions highlighted circular economy practices such as material reuse and upcycling.

Protection of cultural property

The second day focused on the people and institutions that support the industry. Conversations examined workforce development and the alignment of academic, technical, and vocational training programs, contributing to discussions around the Philippine Skills Framework for Textiles and Wearables.

Panels on livelihood development looked at textiles as a source of entrepreneurship and regional economic activity, particularly for communities engaged in traditional weaving and craft production.

Other sessions addressed concerns around the protection and ethical use of indigenous textiles amid growing international interest, including issues of attribution and fair use.

The program also included discussions of textile applications related to human security, including protective equipment, medical textiles, and public safety applications. The day concluded with a Regional Textile Innovation Stakeholders Meeting, where participants exchanged insights and identified areas for continued collaboration.

Expanding market relevance

On its final day, TELACon 2026 examined how Philippine tropical fabrics are being positioned beyond their traditional association with government uniforms. Industry participants discussed opportunities for local fibers and fabrics in mainstream fashion, lifestyle products, and technical applications.

The convention concluded with the KatHABI Textile Innovation Fashion Show, featuring contemporary designs informed by Filipino textile traditions alongside updated interpretations of office and workwear. The event also coincided with the launch of activities marking the diamond anniversary of the Philippine Textile Research Institute.

Over its three days, TELACon 2026 served as a forum for examining how research, industry practices, and policy discussions intersect to shape the direction of the Philippine textile sector, with participants raising both opportunities and constraints facing local production.
