The grandeur of global theater returned to Manila as GMG Productions, in partnership with UnionBank, officially opened the local run of “Les Misérables: World Tour Spectacular” with a gala night at The Theater at Solaire last January 22.
The Manila engagement marks another major international theater production staged in the country, reinforcing the city’s growing reputation as a key stop for world-class tours. Performances will continue until March 1, giving Filipino audiences an extended window to experience the concert-style reimagining of the beloved musical.
The opening night drew a mix of theater veterans, creatives, and fans, many eager to see an ensemble that blends international performers with Filipino stars.
Leading the cast are Lea Salonga, Rachelle Ann Go, and Red Concepcion, three names closely associated with the musical’s global legacy. Salonga and Concepcion portray the manipulative Thénardier couple, while Go reprises the role of Fantine, a part she has performed to critical acclaim in major productions around the world.
Based on Victor Hugo’s 19th-century novel, “Les Misérables” follows the life of Jean Valjean, portrayed in this production by Gerónimo Rauch, as he grapples with themes of redemption and moral responsibility. The “World Tour Spectacular” is adapted from “Les Misérables: The Staged Concert,” which previously enjoyed an extended run in London’s West End, and presents the story in a concert-style format designed for large-scale touring.
Rather than elaborate sets, the production relies on dramatic lighting, orchestral power, and vocal performance to carry its emotional weight. The cast, made up of 110 Filipino and international performers, delivers a visually striking presentation that allows the music and storytelling to take center stage.
UnionBank, the show’s official sponsor, has been a long-time partner of GMG Productions since 2023, supporting a steady stream of international musicals staged in Manila. Past productions under the partnership have included “Hamilton,” “Miss Saigon,” “Come From Away,” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” with upcoming titles such as “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” slated for the 2026 season.
As part of the partnership, UnionBank cardholders were given early access to tickets through an exclusive presale in August 2025, ahead of the public sale. The initiative reflects how major brands are increasingly positioning themselves as enablers of live cultural experiences rather than just event sponsors.
With “Les Misérables: World Tour Spectacular” now running in Manila, theatergoers have another opportunity to experience a global production without leaving the country, as international tours continue to expand their presence on local stages.
