In the world of local luxury furniture, "safe" often sets the tone. Many pieces lean toward pristine finishes and polished surfaces. With the Burnt Collection, the first release in Genteelhome's Sibol series, the atelier takes a more expressive direction. Forged through a controlled burning process, the result is a sophisticated defiance of the disposable, high-gloss veneer culture of fast furniture.
Scorch Floor Mirror and Sereia Side TablesFounder and creative principal Katrina Blanca De Leon has clearly found her burning passion in the char, finding more character in a scorched grain than in any unblemished slab of timber. "The Burnt Collection is our way of rising above challenges and embracing a new chapter," she explains, noting that the shift represents a willingness to move beyond the familiar.
Up close, the pieces reveal layered detail. The burn marks cut through the surface rather than sit on top of it. The grain forms uneven, organic patterns, while edges maintain their structure. Mirrors catch light without softening the charred frames, while seating and tables retain a strong, stable form even with the more textured finish.
Ashira Coffee Table and Cinder Coffee TableThe launch at Hapag in the Balmori Suites offered an intimate setting for guests to experience the collection. Among those in attendance were actress Ruffa Gutierrez, philanthropist Kaye Tinga, and fashion designer Patty Ang.
When you surround charred, defiant wood with such figures, the furniture stops being decor and becomes a reflection of the room. These women have navigated high-pressure environments where resilience is a survival tactic. As De Leon notes, the collection honors those who, despite expectations and limitations, "continue to rise, make an impact, and emerge stronger."
Thirteen years in, Genteelhome continues to evolve its design approach. Now on view at the Genteelhome Atelier in The Podium, the collection proves that the most interesting thing in a room is not the one that is perfect. It is the one that survived the flame and kept its shape. The burn is visible, and for once, the smoke has finally cleared to reveal a brand that no longer needs to prove it can handle the heat.
